I admit to two addictions – God’s Word and marula juice! Jan recently brought me marulas that he had collected in the bush. I was filled with expectation but I was in for a shock. They have the thinnest layer of flesh around a large stone and to get the taste I love so much I had to work very hard. I will never complain about the price of the juice! Like marula juice, God’s Word has to be ‘extracted’. Recently the Holy Spirit helped me to glean a beautiful revelation from the Word of God that I would like to share with you today…
I discovered that there are three things in the Bible that are described as lamps: God’s Word, the spirit of man and the eyes.
GOD’S WORD – Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)
THE SPIRIT OF MAN – The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD (Prov 20:27)
THE EYES – The lamp of the body is the eye (Luke 11:34).
The King James Version uses the word ‘candle’ and I had a beautiful picture of each person being a candle belonging to God. Lamps and candles are simply light-holders and God showed me that they have to be lit from an outside source – either using oil, matches or electricity and in the case of man we need to be lit by God. In Psalm 18:28 David said, For You will light my lamp; The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. That is why one can study the Bible and get nothing out of it – it needs the oil of the Holy Spirit to make the words light up in your spirit.
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12) We all need Jesus to light our spirits and to touch our eyes. What use is light to a blind man? God has enabled me to ‘see the unseen’ and He will do this wonderful miracle for anyone who asks. The question only you can answer is: Has my lamp been lit?
My prayer for each one reading this letter is…that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints … (Ephesians 1:17,18)
Jesus is waiting for you to ask Him to enlighten your darkness.
