“What must I do to inherit eternal life?” is asked of Jesus by both a ruler and a lawyer. You may be wondering the same thing.
On the positive side, both men understood that eternal life is INHERITED. An inheritance comes by virtue of RELATIONSHIP. You will inherit from your parents due to the fact that you are their child. Jesus died for your sins over 2 000 years ago therefore your eternal inheritance is available to you right now when you become a child of God. On the negative side, both men failed to grasp that there is nothing one can do to inherit eternal life.
Simon Peter had the right idea: But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. (John 6:68) It is not a matter of “What must I DO to inherit eternal life?” but rather, “To whom must I COME to inherit eternal life?”Religions of the world require people to ‘DO’ but Jesus Christ says, ‘COME’. If you are doing anything to qualify for eternal life you are wasting your time, effort and money. You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. (John 5:39,40) I love the Message version of the same verse: You have your heads in your Bibles constantly because you think you’ll find eternal life there. But you miss the forest for the trees. These Scriptures are all about me! And here I am, standing right before you, and you aren’t willing to receive from me the life you say you want. Tragically many sincere people are DOING all the right things but have never COME to Jesus for the free gift of eternal life.
Today Jesus is standing right in front of you with His hands outstretched inviting you to come to Him directly for your eternal inheritance. It is the most important invitation you will ever receive. A sincere prayer from your heart will seal the deal. Eternal life cannot be given once we die. It must be received in this life. Becoming a Christian may have cost me my earthly inheritance but the best decision I ever made was to come to Jesus. In death, my heart will stop but my spirit will not miss a beat – Jesus has already put eternity within me! And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. (1 John 5:11,12)
