The War Within

About twenty years ago I became serious about trying to regain my health.  Whatever money I earned was mostly spent on health books.  In those days I did not have access to the internet.  In particular I zeroed in on books concerning the Immune System.  RA is an autoimmune disease so I figured that I needed to learn everything I could about what was happening to my body.  In the process I made an amazing discovery:

As I studied I suddenly realized that there was a common thread running through these books.  They all used warfare terminology – words like defend, army, onslaught, enemy, fight, destroy, civil war, attack, invade, warfare, weapons…began jumping off the pages at me.  My first reaction was, “”Oh no, I am in a war!” RA truly is like a civil war in your own body.  The terror threat had come home!

The Father-heart of God is to protect those He loves.  He knows that we are under constant attack and He has made provision for us.  To protect us from spiritual attacks God gives us a list of spiritual armour to put on.  In the book of Galatians chapter 6 verse 11 He tells us…Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Each piece of armour has a specific protective/defensive purpose.  In order to be spiritually healthy we need to take this passage of scripture very seriously.

In the natural realm our bodies also come under constant attack and that is why God has given us an amazing Immune System to defend and protect ourselves.  When you cut your finger the body immediately responds and sets the healing process in motion because God designed and made the body to heal itself.  However, sometimes the immune system breaks down and autoimmunity results.  It is the result of a hyperactive immune system where the body begins to attack itself.  Normal tissue suddenly becomes ‘the enemy’ and to our shock and horror our bodies turn against themselves and begin attacking us!  Rheumatoid Arthritis is just one of many different autoimmune diseases.  Alzheimers, Crohn’s Disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Diabetes, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis and Psoriasis are just some of the 101 autoimmune diseases affecting many of the people you know.  We owe it to ourselves to learn more about our God-given Immune System.  When something breaks we go back to the manufacturer for answers and that is exactly what I did.  I went back to God for wisdom on how to reverse the damage.  One of the first things He taught me was that in a warfare situation I needed to know who my allies and enemies are.  In the next few blogs I will share some of the ‘friends’ and  ‘enemies’ of our Immune System.

I have discovered that in both the spiritual and the natural realm our level of knowledge generally far exceeds our level of obedience.  We KNOW what we should be doing but how many of us are DOING what we know to do?  Change only happens when we APPLY what we learn.  A bookshelf full of health books, a cupboard packed with vitamins and dusty exercise equipment have no power to change your life.  So I encourage you today to get an exercise book and as something practical comes to your attention, make a note and then JUST DO IT! Remember, one bite at a time is the way to swallow an elephant!

Till next time…
